Why
should I resleeve my cylinder instead of buying a new cylinder?
1. The cost of resleeving is considerably less than a new cylinder
or replating.
2. More and more of the newer engines manufactured today are using some
kind of plating or coating impregnated into the aluminum cylinder wall
to provide an acceptable surface for the piston and rings. Underneath
this very thin coating or plating is aluminum which is an unacceptable
surface for the piston and ring contact. When this surface is worn
through, or the cylinder wall surface has been damaged, the cylinder
cannot be rebored, as this would result in a soft aluminum cylinder
wall. If the cylinder was to be resleeved with a cast sleeve, the
cylinder can be bored to fit oversize pistons, thus multiplying the
life of the cylinder up to eight times. Sometimes even more, depending
on the number of piston over sizes available. Wiseco, for example,
manufactures pistons in over sizes for most motorcycles, ATV's, water
craft, marine, and snowmobile engines.
3. Many racers and motor sport enthusiasts have invested a lot of money
into cylinder porting and polishing. Resleeving can help protect your
investment by recording your port specifications before resleeving,
then return the ports to these specifications after the sleeve has been
installed.
